Why You Should Be Blogging For Your Small Business

Blogging may seem like a lot of effort for not much return unless you are a dedicated blogger but I’m here to tell you that simply isn’t true. There are a number of reasons why you should be blogging for your business and I want to share my top 5 with you.

Why you should be blogging 1 – Increased Authority

You are an expert in your field, after all, that’s why you do what you do. Having a blog on your website will allow you to go into much more detail about topics that are relevant to your business. For example, if you have a product-based business, there is only so much detail you can share on social media about that product before people lose interest. Let’s take flooring as an example. If you sell and fit flooring then you won’t just work with one type of flooring, you will work with multiple types of flooring. These different floorings will have different purposes and features. You could write a series of blog posts about the different types, the benefits of each, the spaces they are most suited to, the range of colour or texture options available, and the different ways in which they are fitted, You could even explain what all the different tools are that you use. This sort of information will be invaluable to prospective clients for 2 reasons. Firstly it will help them to decide exactly what it is they need for their space and secondly, it will let them know that you know what you are talking about.

For those whose businesses do not revolve around physical products, such as digital services, blogging can still help you out when it comes to how to get NDIS clients, or whatever it is that your business deals in. Well-executed posts can showcase your values and what you offer as a business, as well as give you the means to share your views on industry trends and create talking points. Blog posts can also help you to rank on the search engines for frequent customer queries.

We’ve all heard the expression ‘people buy from people’ and this is exactly what they mean. If you are regularly sharing snippets of your knowledge with your potential clients then you are building that relationship and placing yourself in a position of authority.

Why you should be blogging 2 – Improved SEO

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation means that you are making your website easier to find online via search engines. What this means is that you have thought about the words and phrases that people use when they are searching online for what you offer and you have used these within your website.

We all want to make sure that people can find us when they search so by adding blog posts to your site, you will give yourself more content to actually be discovered and more words to be searched. I’ve already mentioned the benefits of displaying your authority by blogging but another perk to doing this is that you will be able to use a range of keywords and phrases in order to talk about your different topics. In the flooring example I used above, you could include different ways of describing the different types of flooring based on what people will search for.

Why you should be blogging 3 – Easy To Update Your Site

One of the fundamentals that you will be told when you set up your website is that you need to regularly update it with fresh content. One of the easiest ways to do this is by regularly adding blog posts to your site. After all, that’s far easier than constantly adding new pages which will make your website get very messy very quickly or creating more work for yourself by rewriting your existing pages.

You can link your blog posts to other pages on your website by writing more in-depth about your products or services and then linking to the relevant page on your website where prospective clients can then make a purchase. For example, if all this sounds like too much work for you, head over to my Work with Me page where you can find out about my ghost blogging service meaning that I can write your blog posts for you. (See what I did there 😁).

Why you should be blogging 4 – You Own The Content

This is a big one and I can’t stress enough how important this is. Unlike other methods of marketing your business such as social media, you own the content. We all remember the horror in recent years of various different social media platforms going down and us not being able to post or interact. We’ve also all heard of people losing their pages or getting blocked for varying lengths of time, scarily sometimes for no reason whatsoever. This is a nightmare situation, especially if your page is deleted because then everything that is on there is lost for good. If you are adding content to your website then even if you wake up one morning to find all social media has disappeared, you will still have plenty of content as it will all be safe on your website.

Why you should be blogging 5 – Add Additional Income

Being self-employed can be tough financially, especially if you don’t have regular clients. Using your website to make money while you sleep is a no-brainer really. There are a few ways you can use your blog to make additional income.

  • Affiliate marketing – This could be as simple as sharing an affiliate link to products or services you love such as your CRM, your social media scheduler or other businesses. You could even create a guide of must-have products and share things like Amazon Affiliate links in there.
  • Downloads – you could create downloadable content that can automatically be delivered to your clients on purchase so you don’t have to lift a finger once it’s all set up.
  • Showcasing your work – This could be done by writing a detailed blog post about each product or service that you offer or by creating a blog post that shows the transformation you have delivered to your client. You could do this as an interview style where you ask a series of questions about what things were like for them before, during and after becoming your client. The idea of this type of post is that the prospective client will then be encouraged to make a purchase.

Why you should be blogging 6 – Share Your Values

Sharing your values on your blog is essential for businesses for several reasons. First and foremost, it humanizes your brand, making you more relatable and trustworthy to customers. When a business openly communicates its core beliefs and principles, it fosters a deeper connection with its audience, as people are naturally drawn to companies that share their values. Additionally, expressing your values on your blog helps establish a clear identity and sets your business apart from your competitors in a crowded marketplace.

In a world where consumers increasingly prioritize socially responsible companies, showcasing values on a blog can enhance a business’s reputation and ultimately drive brand loyalty and long-term success.

I hope you find these suggestions useful, If you implement any of them please come back and share them in the comments below.

On the 18th of October 2022, I discussed this and the many other benefits of blogging live on BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
